Spreading the “GOOD NEWS” along the Bayou! REFLECTIONS ON

EVANGELIZATION: [əˌvanjələˈzāSH(ə)n]

The name Evangeline comes from the Latin word "evangelium"; from Greek "euangelion" εὐαγγέλιον, which translates to "good news", and from "euangelos" εὐάγγελος, bringing good news: eu-, good, + angelos, messenger. The English translation of the name Evangeline is "a messenger of good news."

Evangelization charges us as Christians to witness to our faith in whatever circumstance we find ourselves, through the unique vocation the Lord has given us. Since Catholics live Evangelization according to their personal state of life, it begins with personal discernment. This discernment first draws us into an understanding of how the gifts of the Holy Spirit have nurtured one’s faith. Next, it challenges us on how to use and live out those divine gifts in the world.

Together, we have the ability to be part of a spiritual team of force multipliers -- amplifying all that is good, holy and righteous in the world. Let us embrace the calling to share the "good news" and evangelize!

Join us on this journey!

“But He said to them, “You give them something to eat!” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.” (For there were about five thousand men.) . . . He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the people. And they all ate and were satisfied; and the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full.” - LUKE 9: 13-17

ST MARTINVILLE GARDEN CLUB

Mary Desormeaux, President of the St Martinville Garden Club

SAVE OUR TREE began three years ago.  Our Historic Evangeline Oak was in danger of dying.  Well before 1999 a fig vine ivy was planted underneath her for ground covering.  As the years went by the vine invaded Evangeline’s root system and even embedded itself into her trunk and limbs. She was completely encased causing strangulation and she was not receiving the nutrients that was needed. The club has completed many phases.

1 – Fig vine Ivy has been completely removed.

2 – Organic mulch with vitamins and nutrients has been placed underneath her.

3 – Evangeline has a daughter tree planted on the side of her and she was trimmed back to allow Evangeline to receive air and sunlight.

Evangeline has responded like a champ to all of the intense work.  She was finally able to breath and showed new growth within weeks.  Another amazing thing happened in the fall.  The club harvested acorns and as of today we are in possession of 36 beautiful babies.  Baby Evangeline’s will be available to purchase November 2022.

The next big phase is to do major improvements to Oak Park where Evangeline and her daughter reside.

New fencing has been designed just for her and her daughter.  Work has begun to complete this phase.  We could not have accomplished this without the support and generous donation made to the club from The Woodmen of the World St. Martinville Chapter 134 for the fencing around Evangeline.  The St. Martinville Garden Club is very appreciative for the support and funding from the City of St. Martinville to complete the fencing around Evangeline’s daughter.

Another project that will be completed this summer is a walking trail title “Walk With Evangeline”

Eight Stations telling the story of the journey our ancestors took beginning with the exile to reaching our shores.  You will be able to walk along the Evangeline Blvd and end your walk next to the Evangeline statue on the grounds of St. Martin de Tours Catholic Church.

The St. Martinville Garden Club and The St. Martinville Chamber of Commerce take great pride in joining with the Evangeline Project to promote and share our unique story.  There is so much history all around. Listen to the story of Evangeline and Gabriel.  These ancestors walked with faith, hope and love.

The Evangeline Oak stands proudly with many battle scars and she represents all of us.  Her will to survived is truly remarkable.  Just like us. If you would like to be a friend of Evangeline you can contact, Mary Desormeaux, President of the St Martinville Garden Club at mbeth.talley1959@gmail.com.  Merci beaucoup!
